Metalex manufactured and assembled the complete landing gear assembly for a special version of the Boeing 737. This difficult project required deep precision boring on our 5-axis mill-turn machine. In addition to achieve the desired material properties Metalex partnered with Solar Atmospheres to develop a special heat treat process for key components (made of AISI 4340 and 4340M) using an inert gas quenching in a vacuum furnace to keep the parts bright, clean and limit distortion to enable near net shapes. This enhancement developed by Metalex and Solar resulted in a process change of the landing gear after Boeing engineers confirmed mechanical, dynamic, and fatigue test results.
